Houston CM Helena Brown the Dr. Kevorkian of City Council

The Houston Chronicle has given Houston Council Member Helena Brown too much ink during her short time on city council, and a couple of bloggers (here and there) are giving her too much ink complaining about her getting too much ink. Let me join in.

Brown is the new Dr. Kevorkian of government. Instead of working hard with her counterparts and moving the city forward, Brown simply votes no on everything. Any idiot can vote no on budget items, but it takes leadership and intelligence to prevent from having to do so. It takes working together with your counterparts in order to generate revenue. Simply voting no as an elected official is the act of a political coward.

Brown is a new kind of republican politician which takes the easy road to governing. It 's like the leader who sends us to war instead of preventing an armed conflict. It's easy to raise a fist in anger, especially when you have others fighting the fight for you. It's easy to vote no on budget items when those who will be hurt are hidden from view.

But why would Brown care? She gets her paycheck on time every week. She has health care paid for by her constituents. All that is asked of her is to work hard, be serious, and move the city forward.

For Dr. Kevorkian, that is just too hard to do.

When Helena Brown votes "No" on a budget item, she gets people to notice how much is being spent by our government. This should create a discussion about government spending and encourage citizens to contact their council people and convince them to vote "No" on unnecessary spending as well. I think she is doing a great job!

Anybody can pass out goodies and have your back greased later, just as you suggest. That's the kind of corruption we don't need any more of in government.

Saying no is taking the hard road and should be recognized and rewarded more often. Maybe Houston wouldn't have a balanced budget problem if more people supported council persons with a backbone. Go Helena.
