Reliant Energy's new 5.4 cent rate and their "Special Terms"

From the Power to Choose website:

Reliant Energy has a month to month rate of 5.4 cents per kWh. Sounds pretty enticing especially for those who switch month to month. I found the fine print listed under "Special Terms" to be interesting:
  • $9.95/month base charge if under 800 kWh. So if you are working hard to conserve, you get charged for it.
  • Customer support over the phone is $5.95 per call 24 hours a day
  • Requires auto deduction and paperless billing
If you are considering going month to month, consier Penny Wise. They do not have the base charge or the cost for customer support, and they are less expensive.

But.....read the fine print. You never really know what you are buying with electricity deregulation.

Uh, which is it?

Either it's in the fine print, or you never know what you're getting.

Ah, it seems with Mr. Anonymous here we have heard from the "tort reform" lobby...

There is so much wrong with this. The more juice I use, the better price I get?! They should about give it away to customers that can stay under 800 KWH, many would try, some would make it, and we'd all be better off for it.

Charly, providing electricity is costly. Utilities are the perfect example of a sector that's all about economies of scale. Your proposal would put more customers in the least-profitable category, likely causing broad rate hikes across the board.

The folks who try to hit 800 kWh and can't quite get there would suffer the most.

Yes, economies of scale mean you get a better price for buying in volume. It's the same way for just about everything, as you may have noticed.
