Jeff Cason is a liar. (And his little dog Perry too)

I have enjoyed reading columns by Rick Casey of the Houston Chronicle ever since he moved from the Express-News in San Antonio. Today's column is about State Representative Todd Smith of House District 92 and his republican teabagger primary opponent, Jeff Cason . According to Rick Casey, Jeff Cason is a liar. I have to agree.
Jeff Cason, Smith's challenger in Tuesday's Republican primary, is a liar.
See? Rep Todd Smith filed a bill that passed the House 131-12 and 30-0 in the Senate concerning sex offenders. This bill, as 161 of our elected officials realized was needed and compassionate.
The bill applied only to one-time offenders whose crime was to have sex with someone who was at least 14 and was less than four years younger than the offender.
The bill did not save the offenders, usually young men, from punishment. It just allowed judges to hold a hearing and exempt them from being listed for life on the sex offender registry if they met certain requirements.
The sex had to have been consensual and the only factor that made it a crime was the age of the victim. The judge had to make a finding that the public would not be endangered, and that the exemption was in the best interest of the victim and of justice.
So what does Jeff Cason do? He lied:
So Smith was hardly shocked when Cason, a former Bedford city councilman, sent out a sensationalistic mailer featuring the battered-looking face of a young girl next to large type blaring that “Todd Smith authored a bill allowing sexual predators to live in our neighborhoods without registering on a sexual predators list.”
But, as Casey states, Cason is not the only cowardly liar in the bunch. Governor Rick Perry vetoed the bill stating:
His reason, according to his veto statement, was also false. He said the bill would make offenders “eligible to petition a court for an exemption from sex offender registration, regardless of the age of the victim.”
Liar, liar, pants on fire.

NOTE: Back in 2006 Representative Todd Smith asked the Texas Comptroller, Carole Keaton Rylander Strayhorn Cougar Mellencamp, to investigate the Texas Residential Construction Commission. Her conclusion after a 6 month detailed investigation was to abolish the agency. Three years later, it was.

And that aint no lie.

Leaked Email From Perry's Campaign Show Panic

What is said in email, stays in email or at least it should, but not for Camp Perry. Looks like someone leaked an email from the Perry campaign that paints a rather dismal March 2nd:

From: David Carney
Date: Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 11:59 AM
Subject: Some insights on the upcoming elections
To: James McKay

As we head into Tuesdays primary I thought I'd let you in on some of our thinking going
into the home stretch.

We are absolutely screwed. The early vote turnout is up and we're not excited about who has been voting. Most of the increase appears to be in the "buck toothed inbred" crowd supporting Median. We're thinking turnout will be around a million GOP voters, which is up 40% which implies 40% want Perry out. We are so screwed.

We believe high turnout is bad for us because all types of voters, white, old white, and young white will continue to call for Rick's head on a stick. In fact as of Thursday the Governor leads in all sub groups including first time GOP primary voters and even self identified liberals and moderate on social and fiscal
issues who want Perry's ass out on the street, in the gutter, drinking a cheap form of gatorade, and begging for money.

While no one can predict what will happen on Tuesday, if I had to bet on it, I would be sharpening my interview skills and kissing Hutchison's or that dingbat Medina's fat ass. Hell, carrying Palin's bra strap might even be a good gig after Perry gets his ass spanked.

Three observations that this primary has reinforced:
1) Perry has no message besides the old "Washington bureaucrat". Once voters look at their insurance bill, they wont give a rats ass about Washington.
2) Our research must have been done by the law firm of Larry, Curly, and Moe.
3) Teabaggers aren't helping even as ignorant as they are, they have the attention span of a 2 year old in a butterfly factory. Keeping them on message is like keeping Palin's daughter on birth control. (oh, was that too much?)

If you have other thoughts or observations please keep them to your damn self. Maybe if you had spoken up a little ahead of time instead of kissing my ass telling me how great I was doing, I wouldn't be drowning myself in cheap cough syrup. Shitheads. Go *&^% yourselves.

Thanks for your time, *&^holes.

Dave

Could Democrats Vote in the Perry/Hutchison Runoff?

I wonder.....

This is an interesting question. Barring a miracle come back by either Perry or Hutchison preventing a runoff, could Democrats vote in the Perry/Hutchison runoff? I don't think there is anything to prevent Democrats to vote in the Republican runoff between Rick "The Career Politician" Perry and Kay "Bailout" Hutchison.

This would be a win-win for Democrats by voting in the runoff and FINALLY getting rid of Rick 39% Perry and then beating Hutchison in the general election. Currently Governor 39% is polling just 39% within his own party, so why not help the republicans in the runoff and put a nail in Rick Perry's political coffin once and for all?

Hum......makes you wonder......and wish......for a day without a Perry.

President Obama Doesn't Endorse Jarvis Johnson for Congress

Back when Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson filed to run against Sheila Jackson Lee for Congress, I asked a pretty simple question: Why?
On one note which I think was still a bit sour, Jarvis claims Lee went against the wishes of his constituents by endorsing Hillary Clinton for President. Nothing like opening healed wounds with a bucket of rock salt. This shouldn't be a campaign issue.
I truly believed Jarvis saw an opportunity because of Lee's support of Hillary in the 2008 primary. Personally, I found it admirable that SJL stood by and endorsed someone who had worked hard her entire life for the Democratic party and the Black community instead of going with the sentimental choice. At the time she probably thought, like many of us did, that Hillary was much more experienced than Obama but that is no longer up for debate. We lost that fight, but won the war with Obama elected as our President.

So much for Jarvis attempting to capitalize on this because the President has endorsed Lee for reelection. Maybe the picture of Jarvis was with a cutout of the President and not really the President. Jackson deserves to be reelected. And if Jarvis's intent was to make Lee work for her position, then job well done.

HarrisVotes.org is down days before the election.

Leave it to our republican Harris County Clerk, Beverley Kaufman, who is finally retiring, to screw up once again. www.harrisvotes.org is down. Usually you can browse to harrisvotes.org to find your voting location, but not today. Here is what you will get if you attempt to access harrisvotes.org:

In fact her County website is down too. http://www.cclerk.hctx.net/

Palin calls for a Jihad Against the Republican Party

Former Mayor of Wasilla Alaska, Sarah Palin, called for a Jihad against the Republican Party by the Teabagger Party. In reponse to a question about the future of the teabaggers, Palin said:

"Now a simple answer to a challenge we face today with the tea party movement -- and I believe that I'm a part of that because I'm such a believer in freedom and that's what the tea party is all about -- a simple answer to the challenge that they face and not knowing-- kind of where we belong right now--which is something we must do as patriots, that is, to define sort of where we are going, how we can get to there, and to that for not also,  is to essentially pick a party because we are a two party system, therefore we uh... must --I am sorry what was the question?" said Palin.

David "I did her" Vitter: Louisiana "Depends" on NASA

Senator David "I did her" Vitter grilled NASA Administrator Charles Bolden for cancelling Goerge Bush's pie in the sky Constellation Program that would have taken astronauts to the Moon, Mars, and beyond without any funds. From the Orlando Sentinel:
"It replaces [Constellation] with little more than a hope and a prayer that commercial providers will eventually pick up the slack. I don't think there is any realistic hope that it could be done on a reasonable timeline," Vitter said.
Well, got to agree there, but the alternative was just as bad.  Vitter who was exposed as "Diaper Dave" with his visits to a local prostitution ring in DC and his fetish for wearing diapers probed Bolden on the future of NASA's resources:
"Administrator Bolden, I understand with the cancellation of Constellation that a number of astronaut garments, specifically of the "depends" kind, will be available for use by my ...uh... constituents, uh... elderly constituents. How could my elderly constituents get their hands on these?"
Bolden response was simple "It depends.". :)

Rick Perry is Polling in Houston

For some reason I got an automated poll from the Rick Perry campaign. Here is a sampling of questions:
  1. The health care bill in Congress will use your tax dollars for abortions. Do you agree with this? (This is not true, but then again, we are talking about Rick Perry)
  2. Do you agree with the $1 Trillion bailout of the banking industry? (This was Rick Perry's buddy, George Bush's bill not Obama's. Perry said nothing about the bailout when Bush was in office.)
  3. Are you a teabagger? (Ok they didnt ask it that way, but you get the idea. Perry is dipping into the teabaggers.)
  4. Under Rick Perry Texas has become the most educated state in the nation with TAKS test scores topping the charts. Texas has the highest graduation rates in history. Do you believe this?
  5. Under Rick Perry's leadership insurance rates have been reduced to the lowest in the nation with the most coverage and no deductibles. Will you be able to hold your lunch in if I asked the question again?
  6. Under Rick Perry, Texas has the cleanest air in the entire world gaining him the endorsement of the Sierra Club. Are you still there? Hello? Anyone?
  7. Can Rick Perry count on your vote for the best Governor Texas has had in it's entire history? Say Yes or No. Please do not curse. That is not necessary. Please do not imitate Dick Cheney. You do not have to be rude.

TX Gov Rick Perry: I Came and Took it!

The "Come and Take it" battle cry of the Teabagger Party and Governor Rick Perry took an interesting detour with the Governor depending upon, and accepting, money from Washington. In fact, alot more than anyone realize. From the Dallas Morning News:
Compare the 2009 revenue for the state of Texas with the 2000 revenue, and you’ll see something you might not expect from a state that is led by someone who is sympathetic to secessionists. Federal income has grown 108.53 percent since 2000, more than double the revenue growth of taxes (50 percent).
In other words, Perry's great State of Texas, the state of  "we don't need no stinking federal govmint" has been increasingly dependent on ....wait for it.....the stinking federal government. Hey, don't take my word for it, look at what others are saying on the Come and Take it blog:
This is nothing new, people… Rick’s rhetoric is so compelling (and at times, inflammatory) that a lot of people don’t even look at his record. For instance, to this day I still talk to people who are under the impression Rick rejected the entire federal stimulus package (when in reality he only rejected $500 million of the $16 billion or so Obama offered).
$16 Billion?!?!?! What? You mean Governor Rick Perry Came and Took $16 Billion from those damn lefty government people in Washington DC? Yep.

Perry gives new meaning to Come and Take It. The Teabagger Party must be so proud.

Congressman Pete Olson. One Man's Pork is Another Man's Port

Muse nailed the hypocrisy of Congressman Pete Olson when it comes to earmarks. Earmarks, to most republicans are evil and have no place in our Government, but once the campaign is over and their personal projects are expecting the pork to be delivered, they are considered vital to the community. Here is Pete attempting to justify his pork:
Additional transportation facilities soon will be needed at the Port of Houston, Olson said, pointing out that the Panama Canal is being widened, which will mean greatly increased traffic at the port. “The Port of Houston is one of the key economic drivers in the United States — not just in Texas but the entire country. The Port has to have the ability to move the goods, so we’ll have to take a look at this next term. There is no bigger transportation hub than Texas.” Later, when questioned about earmarks to possibly fund some of the transportation problems, Olson said “I am not opposed to earmarks — just specific ones like funding for a museum or a ‘bridge to nowhere.’”
Olson believes in the free market, except for the Port of Houston. It is clear that Olson believes  Government, not the free market, can fund infastructure improvements in order to create jobs and expand. To Olson, one man's pork is another man's port.Oink.

p.s. Earmarks used to be gentleman agreements made in secrecy. The "Bridge to no where" was funded in this manner, sponsored by a republican Senator, and allowed by a republican Congress. The Democrats in 2008 changed the rule and now require all projects to be identified in public and their sponsor listed before they would be considered. This does not ban earmarks, but it requires those that have merit, like the funds for the Port of Houston, be justified.

StephenThomas and Bob Perry. Who's Your Sugar Daddy?

StephenThomas Thomas Thomas, the former Executive Director of the Texas Residential Construction Commission, is running for the House seat vacated by Representative Gattis. Gattis seemed to had enough of the home building industry. Last session he filed a bill to eliminated the use of mandatory binding arbitration. The hearing focused on the abuse by the home builders. Gattis had probably heard enough from his constituents who had been loud and persistent in their complaints for years.

Gattis was becoming one of the few Republican lawmakers who was willing to challenge the industry, their lobbyists, and their leader, Bob Perry. Steven Thomas is running against a field of right wing teabaggers, with only $8000 in his campaign. Until yesterday:
Houston homebuilder Bob Perry and his wife Doylene on Tuesday sent an 11th-hour, $25,000 contribution to a Republican candidate for the Texas House who once served as executive director of the state agency that hears homeowner complaints against builders.
Based upon his performance during his short tenure as the TRCC director, it is clear Thomas, if elected, will be Bob Perry's go to man for home builder friendly legislation.

Let's hope I am wrong on this.

Who Shouldn't be Governor of Texas

With early voting in the Texas primary coming to an end on Friday, it should be very clear who shouldn't be Governor of Texas. Let's review:

Five Unknowns. There are a total of seven candidates who have filed on the Democratic ticket for Governor. Five of them are not Bill White or Farouk Shami. And these five should not be Governor, will not be Governor, and will not be remembered. Let's move on.

Farouk Shami. God bless Farouk for running, but he will not be running for office after March 2. Farouk has distributed millions to political consultants, printers, and sign makers, providing a mini stimulus to the state. Farouk may know how to run a successful hair care business, but running a State is completely different. Screwing up a hair cut or coloring your hair the wrong color can be fixed with a little time, but screwing up a government has serious consequences. Ask Rick Perry.

Debra Medina. Debra Medina is a politically uneducated, ignorant, teabagger. Nothing more. She will get the far, far right of the republican primary vote and come out a hero amongst the teabaggers but other than that, she will not advance and rightfully so. She doesn't have a clue on how to run a State or a community association for that matter. She is a horrible candidate with simple minded ideas that cater to the fringe of the far right of the republican party. Unfortunately she will become the Sarah Palin of Texas, without the screeching voice.

Rick Perry. Rick Perry has a record of failure over his 10 years in office. As a career government employee Perry will retire with a $125,000/year pension and free tax funded health care for the rest of his life. In return, he has turned this state into a disaster zone, ranking last in the nation in education, health care, cost of utilities, and many other categories. His primary campaign has been nothing more than an attack on Washington, failing to brag about his own achievements over the last 10 years since he has few. He has failed to secure an endorsement from any major newspaper in the State because with his record of failure. Perry has turned us into the "Thank God for Texas" state. He has embarrassed us and should't be Governor. But that won't stop him from getting the republican nomination. Failure is a republican family value.

Look for a Bill White vs Rick Perry race in November.

Parker Calls for Criminal Probe of Metro

Good for the Mayor!

After hearing and reading about the shredding of documents by Metro, I thought either a criminal or independent investigation of Metro was warranted. Mayor Parker today called for a criminal investigation. (Notice that former contender for Mayor, Gene Locke, is standing with the leadership of Metro in back of a sign "Metro. Going Places." Like to jail.)

Pulte Homes Busted in San Antonio! Governor Perry AWOL

Word to Pulte Homes: Don't let mad homeowners into a closed meeting with a video camera. You  might get embarrassed.

Case in point, the homes in San Antonio, Texas that are falling off a cliff due to a failed retaining wall. Pulte conducted a closed meeting with the homeowners to discuss the situation especially for the 25 owners whose home were declared uninhabitable. City officials were not invited. From the San Antonio Express-News:
The San Antonio Express-News received a video of the entire private meeting on Jan. 25 at a Drury Inn & Suites between Centex and residents of Rivermist and The Hills of Rivermist, filmed by an attendee. It shows Centex Homes’ Trey Marsh telling scores of families, “They don’t feel like there’s a threat anymore based on the work that we’ve done since this whole deal started.”
That statement isn't exactly true and the City of San Antonio called them on it.
No city officials were invited to the session. But Jill DeYoung, chief of staff for City Councilman Reed Williams, whose district includes Rivermist, managed to get inside. DeYoung said the comments about the departure of the fire department surprised her. “That was something that was said by Centex that was not the case at all,” DeYoung said.
Rick Perry AWOL
Thanks to City Councilman Reed Williams for sending his staff into this meeting. You have to wonder where other elected officials are. Governor Rick Perry, who is owned by the home building industry, wont set foot on the property to call for common sense regulation of the industry to prevent these problems from happening in the future and to hold shoddy builders accountable. State Represenative Leibowitz has called for licensing of home builders. This subdivision is in his district and his staff is monitoring it closely.

Good luck to these homeowners. They are going to need it, especially if Perry is reelected.

Congress Strips Insurance Industry of Antitrust Exemption

In a clear vote against the insurance industry:
The chamber voted 406 to 19 to effectively repeal an antitrust exemption that has meant that states take the lead in enforcing antitrust law for health insurers. Consumer groups say states often lack the resources to effectively regulate insurers.
The Senate should follow. Good for them! This should be the first of a series of laws passed to stop the insurance industry to run over consumers in US.  It would be interesting to see who voted against this bill.

TX Supreme Court Asleep at the Bench

The Texas Supreme Court is getting sued for being asleep on the bench.
Plaintiffs in a class action suit pending on an interlocutory appeal at the Texas Supreme Court since November 2005 have sued each of the high court's nine justices in the U.S. District Court for the Western District in Austin, alleging in their original complaint that the delay has deprived the plaintiffs of their constitutional rights to due process.
The Supreme Court heavily favors corporations and business interests in Texas over the consumer. All of the 9 Justices are republicans.

Lyondell Can't Pay $26M in School Taxes

OUCH!

Pasadena ISD will not be able to collect $26Million in taxes for 2010 from Lyondell Basell. According to the Corpus Christi Caller:
LyondellBasell, the owner of a chemical manufacturing plant in Nueces County, informed jurisdictions across Texas that it will not be able to make property tax payments for this year.
...
LyondellBasell declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, saying it needed to restructure in the face of a global economic downturn. Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code usually allows a company to keep operating while it determines what it owes its creditors and seeks additional financing.
If a chemical company can't make money making chemicals in the State of Texas with little if any regulations, then maybe they shouldn't be making chemicals. Try soap.

Closing Arguments in Decade Long Battle Against Bob Perry Homes

Closing arguments are expected tomorrow, Thursday, in the marathon, lemon-home case between Perry Homes and Bob &; Jane Cull. The Culls would greatly appreciate it if you can to come to the court house in Fort Worth in support:

Background:
To make a 10 year story short, the Culls, an elderly couple in Fort Worth, bought a new home from Bob Perry. Quickly they found it was defective. They won in arbitration, something that is suppose to be a final judgement, but Perry appealed the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court which ruled in his favor and returned the case to a civil court. All lower courts refused to overturn the arbitration, but the Supreme Court came to Perry's defense. Perry had donated large amounts of money to the Justices, all Republican. The civil trial is coming to an end on Thursday.

Location:
The case is in Judge Tom Lowe's 236th District Court, which is on the 7th floor of the Tim Curry Justice Center, 401 W. Belknap in downtown Fort Worth. Basically go into downtown on 4th, right on Commerce about 4-5 blocks to Belknap, left on Belknap to 401, which is on the south side (left) of Belknap at the corner of Taylor Street and Belknap. Within a block or two in each direction are both open and garage (by far most expensive) parking. There are meters on the street but you will have to feed them during the day. Security in the Justice Center is almost identical to air travel (including removing your shoes).

Keisha Rogers Wingnut for Congress TX CD 22

As Hal said, the more you hear about Keisha Rogers, the more you won't vote for her in the Democratic Primary for Congressional District 22.

Texas CD 22 is a heavily Republican area because of the re-redistricting by Tom DeLay and Rick Perry. The voters here love republicans no matter how much it costs them in insurance, electricity, college tuition, and NASA jobs. It just doesn't matter to them. They will vote republican over and over and over again.

That is why no one with a lick of sense will run on the Democratic ticket for this position. It is simply not winnable. (The exception was with Nick Lampson who defeated the ethically challenged Tom DeLay, but was ousted by the rookie Pete Olson two years later.)

One person without a lick of sense is Keisha Rogers, a LaRouchie candidate. Because the party cannot screen candidates anyone who wants to call themselves a Democrat can apply. She is more fringe than any teabagger in the republican party. But, don't take my word for it, go watch her video and spread it far and far right

Texas Sucks Electronically

Well, this sucks.

Texas ranks as one of the nation's least-connected states, with only three out of five Texans with Internet access at home, according to numbers released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Texas ranks just aove Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi.

It's bad enough we rank near last in education, social services, cost of electricity, insurance, and  the cost of college has skyrocketed, but to be 44th in the nation for internet access? Come on! Really? Worst of all is the reason we lag behind:
But in 1996, Texas lawmakers decided not to make Internet access universal, Straubhaar said. Instead, they chose to foster competition among phone companies when they passed an amendment to the Public Utility Regulation Act, according to UT Digital Divide Project data published in 1999.
Yep, just like they did with electricity, insurance, and college tuition, they "fostered" competition for the private sector. And they competed with each other on how much they could charge consumers and get away with it.

Once again, Texas sucks. We need new leadership in Texas. Someone who doesn't suck like Rick Perry does.

Republican Hypocrites on Parade: Palin has Socialized Medicine

Republican Harris County Commissioner Steve Radack showed last week that hypocrisy runs deep in his party after bragging about his $23.Million tax funded soap box derby track while layoffs for county employees may be coming. And republican Congressman, Pete Olson, thrashed the stimulus package, voted against it, then asked for $3Billion of it for NASA.

Now we have Sarah Palin who yelled about "Death Panels" and the evils of socialized, government health care, yet her grandson, Tripp, is on socialized, government health care, free of charge:
Recently released documents from the custody battle show clearly Tripp Palin Johnston has socialized health care through Indian Health Services and the Alaska Native Medical Center.
Oh, Congressman Olson has tax funded health care also to. :) It's ok for them to have tax funded health care, but not anyone else. Hypocrites.

Commissioner Radack's $2.3 Million Track Record

While Harris County is considering possible layoffs and less services to the county, Harris County Commissioner Steve Radack is bragging about his $2.3 Million tax funded soapbox derby track in his district.
Radack's crew is putting the finishing touches on a $2.3 million soapbox derby park. The first races are scheduled for next month.
.....
It opens as county government departments look hard at cutting spending. The sheriff alone has pledged to trim as much as $47 million and the county health department could be looking at laying off dozens of employees
Radack claims that people from all over the country will flock to Houston to race on this tax funded track. I thought the republican party didn't believe in frivolous spending, or having the government do what the private sector should be doing. What gives?

This pork barrel spending should put an end to the constant whining from the republican party about cutting taxes while cutting spending, because their top man is taxing and spending on, of all things, a soap box derby park.

I guess one man's pork is another man's park.

Time to Screen White, Christian, Angry, Republican, Government Haters

If the pilot that flew into the IRS building in Austin was of middle eastern background, the white, Christian, angry, republican, government haters would be calling for background checks and surveillance of their airports and planes.

Instead maybe it is time to start wire tapping all the white, Christian, angry, republican, government haters. Yesterdays event was another Timothy McVeigh attack on government workers, this time fueled by the teabagger movement and the extreme radical right of the republican party.

As with Congress, there are no moderates left in the republican party. There is no common sense. There is no middle ground. There is no "working together" with these people. They have been taken over by the worst of the right fueled by ignorance and hatred towards the United States, the President, and our government.

It's the new face of terror.

Who's Side is the Arbitrator on?

Thanks to Dave Fehling of KHOU for this story concerning arbitration. It is much worse. The arbitrator in the story ruled against a homeowner, but did not disclose he was the general counsel for the Greater Homebuilders Association. His arbitration was overturned. Later he did it again, ruling against a homeowner while representing the builders. this time getting away with it after the Texas Supreme Court refused to hear the case.
This year Steve Paxson once again ruled against a homeowner for over $97,000 and once again, did not disclose he was the general council of the Greater Houston Builders Association. The homeowner sued Paxson and the AAA, but unfortunately, like the Falbaum's case, the Appeals Court claimed the AAA and arbitrators are immune from lawsuits even for not disclosing blatant conflicts of interest. Twice!
He has since been removed from the American Arbitration Association.

Hypocrites on Parade: Congressman Pete Olson

As Rachel Maddow said Congressman Pete Olson "Bashed the stimulus bill, voted against it, then praised it". Olson voted against the stimulus bill which provided funding to stimulate the economy. Olson representing his party and not his district voted against the bill then groveled to the President asking for $3Billion for NASA. From the Chronicle:
“Investing in space is well worth the return on investment” in the effort to “secure good jobs and stabilize our economy,” Olson said in a statement.
Yep. Right.  With Olson, one man's pork is another man's bacon. Take a few minutes to watch Rachel expose the hypocrites of the republican party:

Former TRCC Executive Director Running for State Representative

Well, we know who the home builder's goto man will be if Stephen Thomas wins in the Republican primary for House District 20. This seat was held by Rep Gattis who filed legislation last year to abolish the use of mandatory binding arbitration. I doubt seriously if Thomas would take that stand with the home builders.

Stephan Thomas
Stephan Thomas is the former Executive Director of the now defunct Texas Residential Construction Commission. This Commission was so poorly managed it was abolished within 6 years. John Krugh, the Vice President of Bob Perry Homes and appointed to the TRCC, moved to offer the Executive Director position to Thomas when the Commission was created. He didn't last very long, resigning shortly after a hearing on the abuse of arbitration in the Senate.

Senate Hearing
Thomas, an invited guest to the hearing, was grilled about stacking the Arbitration Task Force, which included 3 members of the American Arbitration Association, The President of the Texas Association of Builders, and their lawyers. There was no representation of the homeowners or the public. Thomas claimed under oath that he couldn't find anyone interested to be on the committee.

Unfortunately for Thomas, I testified after Thomas and reminded the members of the Committee that we had recommended 5 individuals with excellent experience for the Task Force. Thomas was asked to return to the microphone and was once again grilled on the composition of the Task Force. Shortly after the hearing Thomas replaced 4 members of the Task Force with the recommendations that were provided to him.

He resigned shortly afterward.

Alberto Gonzales: Thank God for Baylor!

"WACO, Texas — Baylor University named former Clinton White House nemesis Kenneth Starr its new president on Monday, saying the one-time independent prosecutor's Christian ideals and experience heading a law school made him the ideal candidate to lead the world's largest Baptist university."

In a prepared statement Alberto Gonzales who is teaching ethics classes at Texas Tech University said "Thank God for Baylor! I am glad the unwanted attention will now be diverted to Baylor University. What a bunch of dumb&^%$s! Who would even consider hiring someone with such of record of incompetence?"

USAA Raises Homeowners Premiums by 24%

Last year USAA raised premiums by 21% in the Clear Lake area.
USAA, an insurance company providing insurance for officers of the armed forces and their families, have raised their rates by 21% in the Clear Lake area. (based upon my policy which I have had for over 18 years)
This year premiums are being raised by 24%. Prior to insurance reforms of 2003, I was paying $783/year with a $500 deductible and a full coverage policy. Now my bill is $2800/year with a $4800 deductible, and less coverage. And USAA is no longer writing comprehensive policies altogether.

This abuse by USAA reminds me of what Governor Rick Perry said before the insurance reforms of 2003:
"In recent months, there have been troubling trends in the homeowner's insurance market in Texas," said Governor Perry. "In too many cases, homeowner's insurance is getting more expensive, coverage is becoming harder to get, and instead of more companies stepping up to meet the demand, some companies have stopped writing comprehensive policies altogether."
Since then Perry has been quiet while his insurance buddies raised premiums to the highest in the nation. Now, I have shopped around, in fact I called State Representative Larry Taylor for a quote. He owns an independent insurance agency and championed the insurance reforms of 2003. His office refused to give me a quote stating they couldn't compete with USAA.

God help us all.

Leo Vasquez Takes Credit for Lawsuit Against the County

Leo Vasquez knows how to spin a lawsuit. Harris County Tax Assessor/Collector, Leo Vasquez, takes credit for providing services to the voters of Harris County.
HOUSTON February 15, 2010-- Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Leo Vasquez announced the launch of a convenient, Web-based tracking system that provides citizens a handy tool to check the status of their pending voter registration application any time.
What he doesn't say is that this "handy tool" he created was dictated by the settlement of a lawsuit brought against his office by the Texas Democratic Party, a lawsuit that costs taxpayers  $65,000 in attorneys fees and costs. This settlement was also approved by the United States Department of Justice/Civil Rights Division.

The lawsuit was brought by the TDP because of voting rights violations by Paul Bettencourt who quit just weeks after being elected. Vasquez quickly agreed to the settlement to stop further discovery and possible criminal charges. In this settlement, Vasquez agreed to 22 specific changes to his handling of voter registration procedures and standards, including posting the status of pending voter registration applications.

The exact thing he is now bragging about providing. It's like a 12 year old bragging about cleaning up the glass of a window he just broke. As the TDP has said, it is sad that Vasquez has to be sued in order for him to do his job correctly.

It is sadder than he takes credit for it.

Palin's Palm Pilot on Perry

Congressman Pete Olson "has zero clout at the White House"

NASA has lost the woefully underfunded Constellation program and a fight is underway to save parts of it led by the rookie Congressman, Pete Olson. The article in today's Chronicle says what has been said throughout the political circles in the Clear Lake area: Pete Olson has absolutely no clout in Congress.
As a conservative Republican who has opposed almost every Obama administration initiative, the 47-year-old Rice University graduate has zero clout at the White House.

“Folks voting against everything a president puts out can't walk up to the president later and say, ‘Oh by the way, here's something I want you to help me with,' ” one Texas Democrat said.
At every townhall meeting Olson makes it a point to trash the President, not just saying he disagrees with him or his policies, but trashing him. He comes close to calling him a Socialist to get a rise out of the teabaggers in the audience. He has made fun of Obama's Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, with strategic pauses when stating that Rahm was the first person he saw after fainting from a heart problem. (Emanuel was the first to provide emergency first aid to Olson. Olson later had a pacemaker installed.)

And now he wants the help of the President and of Congress? The voters of Clear Lake overwhelmingly voted against Congressman Nick Lampson in 2008 who not only had clout with the Bush Administration, but whould have had clout with the Obama Administration.
Former Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Stafford, who had been in line to lead the House panel overseeing NASA before losing his seat to Olson, blames Texas' current predicament squarely on the sweeping congressional redistricting fashioned by then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.
“Texas has suffered greatly,” said Lampson, who lost races in two congressional districts as a result. “Without that redistricting, I would have been chairman of the space subcommittee representing JSC and in direct contact with the president and House leadership. That would have made a difference.”
Now, Clear Lake voters have Pete Olson, no clout, and no Constellation. Enjoy.

Perry was for Business Taxes Before he was Against Them

If you have been watching Perry's commercials concerning the business tax, you might think Perry single handedly provided a tax cut to small business in Texas. Unfortunately, he doesn't tell you the whole story.

As I have said before:
What Perry fails to mention is that he signed this huge business tax into law in 2005 and then repealed it in 2009 after Texas businesses became outraged. The budget of 2005 which included this was created by a republican controlled House. It was passed by a republican controlled Senate. And it was signed by a republican Governor who bragged about it in 2007.
Perry claims to have balanced 5 budgets, which again is misleading since Texas cannot by law run a deficit, but he did it partially on the backs of small business. Taking credit for fixing something he screwed up is becoming a staple of Perry's campaign.

Next he will take credit for advances in education in Texas. Ignorance is a powerful tool used by a fool

PACing in the Endorsements by the Greater Harris County Democrats

There is a new group endorsing candidates called the Coalition of Harris County Democratic Elected Officials which Lisa Falkenberg wrote about in the Houston Chronicle. It wasn't a flattering article.
Frustrated candidates are abuzz with reports of behind-the-scenes controversies and shenanigans ahead of next month's primary, from a local Democratic club hitting up candidates for hefty donations to big-name elected officials throwing around their weight with their own endorsing group.
Greater Harris County Democrats
A couple of years ago the first of these stealth Political Action Committees, the Greater Harris County Democrats, emerged and endorsed some of the candidates who were not getting many endorsements, such as State Representative Al Edwards, State Representative Kevin Bailey, and Jose Medrano who was running against one of the best State Representatives in Houston, Jessica Farrar.

The GHCD, not to be confused with the Harris County Democrats, no longer has a website and it is unclear who they are or how they conduct endorsements. According to the Texas Ethics Commission they raised about $9500 including a $2000 donation from Kevin Bailey who they endorsed. Expenditures of $13,900 included $13,400 to Johnston Campaign for mailers.

If this is nothing but a few people raising money and charging for endorsement mailers, then it is wrong and candidates should not screen for these endorsements, if they even screen.

PACing it in.
Forming a PAC to raise money and endorse candidates is nothing new in politics. The republicans have mastered this. Former Speaker of the House Tom Craddick has a number of PACs including the "Jobs PAC"
Here’s what happened: Craddick gave $250,000 to the Texas Jobs & Opportunity Build A Secure Future PAC (Jobs PAC) on January 10, 2008, along with instructions to distribute the money to incumbent Democratic Representatives; Kevin Bailey, Dawnna Dukes, Kino Flores, and Aaron Pena. Each representative was offered $50,000.
Personally I find these PACs growing like a weed, such as poison ivy. It poisons the process and, when left unchecked, can become just as bad as the republican's PACs. Bad for Texas. Bad for Democracy. And bad for Democrats.

Governor Rick Perry's Response to NASA's New Direction

Here is the audio of Governor Rick Perry's response to NASA's new direction and what he intends to do about the loss of jobs:

Audio

Republican Congressman Ron Paul on NASA

From Republican Congressman Ron Paul:
"We must recognize the government led space program is dead and the corpse must be buried as soon as possible. Any defense functions should be put under the military, and the rest of NASA should be sold to private operators. The reciepts would be applied to the national debt. Then, all government roadblocks to commercial development of space must be removed."
Well, you got half of what you wanted with the recent decision to give private contractor federal money to develop new vehicles. And here is what Governor Perry said:
"Texans are tired of government intrusion. I say this to the President: No bailouts for the Johnson Space Center. Give those jobs to private contractors in California, that sissy state where they lap up government handouts."

Remember, Government Doesn't Create Jobs

How many times have we heard the members of the republican party say the government doesn't create jobs, the private sector does. Well, they now have the opportunity to prove it:
WASHINGTON — The Houston-area economy suffered a second blow Friday, with the U.S. Army rejecting a Sealy-based company's appeal to keep combat truck production in Texas, where it has been for 17 years.
The Army's action to award the contract to a Wisconsin firm — following a review ordered by Congress' watchdog Government Accountability Office — could claim an estimated 3,000 jobs at the Texas plant in suburban Houston, with layoffs beginning later this year.
It is tough for those in Sealy who depended upon these jobs, but with competition for a contract comes defeat for someone. Republicans throughout the area are now pissing and moaning about losing these government funded jobs, while continuing to claim that the private sector creates jobs, not the government. It is going to be hard for the city to pick itself up after this loss, but I am sure their republican officials will find private sectors jobs for them.

How Many Zeros in Texas's Upcoming $19 Billion Deficit?

Thanks to Burnt Orange Report for this video of Linda Chavez-Thompson who is running for Lt Governor against Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earl. The line of the night was when Linda was talking about the upcoming deficit facing Texas next year. She asked:

"How Many Zeros in Texas's Upcoming $19 Billion Deficit?
11, if you include Rick Perry and David Dehurst.

Californians Should Whack a Teabagger

Californians who will see the cost of their health care plans increase by 39% can thank their local teabaggers for working to kill health care reform.Up until this increase, Texas was the state with the highest increase of health insurance costs in the nation even after passing massive tort reform limiting medical malpractice suits to $250,000. Thank God for California!
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Health insurer WellPoint blames the Great Recession and rising medical costs for its planned 39 percent rate increase for some California customers. To President Barack Obama, however, it's Exhibit A in his campaign to revive the health care overhaul.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who received the company's explanation in a letter Thursday, said "it remains difficult to understand" how premium increases of that size by can be justified when WellPoint Inc. reported a $2.7 billion profit in the last quarter of 2009.
So, if you are angry and can't afford the increase, go whack a teabagger and thank them for stopping a thoughtful discussion and debate on health care reform. Or just bend over and take it.

Fox News: Teabaggers, a Fruitless Mix of Racism, Conspiracy Theories

Fox News must be trying to distance themselves from the Teabaggers. In a poll at foxnews.com 79% believe the Teabagger movement is a "Fruitless Mix of Racism, Conspiracy Theories". Ouch! Only 14% believe it is for smaller government and fiscal responsibility.

Add this to what Meghan McCain said about the baggers: It's innate racism, and I think it's why young people are turned off by this movement,". It is becoming clear, even to Fox "fair and balanced" News that Teabaggers are nothing more than a bunch of angry, fat, white, racist, republicans. This is now the new republican party.

They guy on the left is "Dale Robertson operates TeaParty.org who looks a lot like a...uh... angry, fat, white, racist, republican. Unfortunately Robertson has soiled our Texas flag as well as stretched it to a size XXXL.

Is Kinky Friedman Sick?

I am not talking about Kinky being sick, as in the phrase "one sick puppy", although he is at times, but I mean he looks unhealthy as well as unattractive. Hopefully he isn't sick. See for yourself:

At least he doesn't look like his buddy Governor Jesse Ventura who has morphed into a Klingon:

Republicans Trashed the Stimulus, Voted No, Then Praised it's Effect....

Oh my gosh. The Republican Party got nailed by Rachel Maddow. It is ten minutes of outing the hypocrites of the republican party who voted no on the stimulus bill then came home signing ceremonial large checks to distribute it saying it will create jobs:

Endorsement Watch: Lee Arellano for Judge 270th Civil District Court

Experience counts when it comes to running for Judge of a Civil District Court and so does dedication to the Democratic Party and it's principals when running for the Democratic nomination. Lee Arellano has both.

Lee has been practicing law for 28 years, 10 years more than his opponents. Lee ran for Judge in 2002 when it was hard to find Democratic candidates to run for any position. After losing the race, instead of packing his bags and waiting for an easier opportunity, like we have in 2010, Lee co-founded and incorporated the Harris County Democratic Lawyers Association (HCDLA) which has grown into a large organization. As a 5 term President of this group, Lee decided to run again for Judge in Harris County.

Lee's experience will serve the citizens of Harris County well and his dedication to the Democratic Party as a candidate and President of the HCDLA earns him the nod for the March primary. As Democrats we should endorse and support candidates who have worked hard in their profession, have gained the trust of their peers, and especially if they have worked hard for our party.
Lee Arellano is that candidate.

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Leo Vasquez Violating Legal Order

Leo Vasquez is thumbing his nose at the Texas Democratic Party and the United States Justice Department by violating an agreement that he signed to settle a lawsuit last year.
The state Democratic Party sued the Harris County Tax Office last year, accusing it of illegally rejecting thousands of voter registrations and amassing a backlog of tens of thousands of incomplete registrations without promptly informing people of their status.
Vasquez quickly signed an agreement to end the lawsuit and prevent any further discovery, embarrassment, and possible criminal charges and yet he has failed to abide by the agreement and live up to his word. Coming from the hand picked appointee after Paul Bettencourt quit just weeks after being elected should surprise no one.

One thing is for sure, Vasquez knows the suit can be reopened and this time there will be no settlement, but a trial instead, and who knows what. Vasquez was given a chance to correct the problems and gave his word that it would be done. The TDP will not give him a second chance to do so.
“The Texas Democratic Party only entered this settlement because it specifically requires Harris County to end practices we believe were responsible for rejecting tens of thousands of voter registration applications in the county last year.  Given the lagging efforts of Leo Vasquez, we will consider any necessary option to monitor the Harris County Voter Registration process to make sure this agreement is enforced and the rights of voters are protected.”

Endorsement Watch: Hank Gilbert for Agriculture Commissioner

In the Democratic primary for Texas State Agriculture Commissioner there is only one Democrat on the ballot, Hank Gilbert and he is a good one.

While the other self proclaimed Democrat on the ballot was busy crossing the state selling books, CDs, and chomping on cheap cigars, Hank was crossing the state on behalf of citizens of Texas. On his own time and money, Hank testified against the Trans Texas Corridor, Rick Perry's private toll road, at hearings held throughout the state. During the legislation session, Hank continued working to defeat the project, the massive land grab, and increased taxes. Anyone who has worked to kill a project like the TTC understands how difficult and time consuming this can be.

As a rancher in Whitehouse Texas, Hank understood the devastation the TTC land grab would be to those affected by the project. While our elected officials, including the current Agriculture Commissioner, Todd Staples, were supporting the land grab, Hank as a private citizen was supporting the taxpayers of the State to kill it.

Hank Gilbert is a great example of a Democrat fighting for those who need help against out of control elected officials and overwhelming corporate influence. Unlike his opponent, Hank knows which end of the cow to feed and the roles and responsibilities of the Agriculture Commission.

In the Democratic primary, Hank is the only choice.

#46 Per-pupil public school state funding,

Thanks to Blake Mitchell for the pic!

An Embarrassing Endorsement for Shami

Sometimes I have to wonder about the Mexican American groups in Texas. We are the fastest and largest minority in the State, yet we don't vote like we are, and then we make these real stupid endorsements:
Following a meeting on Saturday morning, the Mexican American Democrats (MAD) announced the group's endorsement of Texas Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Farouk Shami.

Steve Salazar, State Chair for the Mexican American Democrats of Texas, said that Farouk Shami's "willingness to sit down and listen, to talk to people about issues that affect us as a group-not only the economy and jobs, but also immigration and crime-led us to make this endorsement. He is inclusive of all people from all walks of life and can identify with those of us who were not born in the United States." Salazar added that the group felt Shami "represents to a lot of us what the American Dream is about: hard work, dedication to the community, and willingness to serve."
This is embarrassing. It is no wonder we don't vote with endorsements like this. Next up for MAD? Endorsement of Kinky Friedman along with the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas Morning News to Endorse Shami and Medina

The Dallas Morning News Editorial Board must be smoking crack for endorsing Kinky Friedman in the Democratic Primary for Agriculture Commissioner. One thing the DMN didn't remember is that Friedman is not a Democrat. Never has been. Never will be. You would think if you were going to endorse a Democrat, endorse one that is actually a Democrat and one that knows something about what he is running for. Their endorsement of Friedman was nothing more than the following sentences:
Friedman, 65, of Austin, doesn't get into such details. He says he'd hire experts to hash out policy so he could concentrate on being a spokesman for family farms and kindness to animals. That's not a great model for the job, but a better one than Gilbert proposes.
What is next for the DMN? Using their level of intelligence, I would expect them to endorse Farouk Shami who would pour money into consultants and hair care products so he could travel the world to bring jobs to Texas. Then they will endorse Medina who would find volunteer teabaggers to run the office of Governor and fend off an attack from the Mexicans. I mean, why the hell not? Here is the proposed writeup for Shami:
Shami, 65, of Houston, doesn't get into such details. He says he'd hire experts to hash out policy so he could concentrate on being a spokesman for his hair care products and kindness to animals. That's not a great model for the job, but a better one than White proposes.
And one for Medina:
Medina, 23, of Poteet, doesn't get into such details. She says she'd hire experts to h\ash out policy so he could concentrate on being a spokesman for secession and kindness to animals. That's not a great model for the job, but a better one than Perry proposes.
I've seen real thoughtless endorsements before, like endorsing Bush in 2004, but this one is incredibly stupid.

McCain: Teabaggers are Racists

Well color me surprised! Meghan McCain, the daughter of Senator John McCain called the Teabagger movement "innate racism" something that goes without saying. Also going without saying, but she said it anyway, is that the teabaggers are scaring away the youth.
"It's innate racism, and I think it's why young people are turned off by this movement," McCain retorted on The View.
"I'm sorry, but revolutions start with young people, not 65 year old people talking about literacy tests and people who can't say the word 'vote' in English," McCain added.
I have to agree. Who would want to teabag with a bunch of old, white, racist, republicans? Talk about Gross Old People! (GOP)

Shami Needs to Shadup

When trying to climb out of a hole, that you dug for yourself, sometimes the best thing to do is grab a ladder and shut up. This is what Farouk Shami should be doing right about now instead of insulting the very party he is trying to win the nomination from.
Clearly I don't say the Democratic Party, because they've been supporting one candidate because he's been a Democrat longer than me. That is not democratic. That's not in the Constitution. And that is not what people think. So it is not fair that the Democrat Party backs up somebody without listening to the other.
The Democratic Party, as a party, does not support any candidate until the primary is over. Members of the Party are free to what what they want, except to support a non-Democrat, which Shami seems to be moving toward. If Shami was so concerned about getting support from Democrats, maybe he should have been a Democrat before running for office as one.

Shami doesn't have a Democratic voting record, or a voting record for that matter. It's hard to run for the nomination of a party when you can't show, at the very least, you participated in their elections. Shami hasn't participated in the Democratic party. Again, if you are going to run, at the very least be part of the party and participate. And because of this he doesn't have any name recognition. Anywhere. Not even in the Houston area.

Shami is behind in the polls and for good reasons including sitting at the bottom of a hole he dug. He should quietly climb out without blaming others for digging it.

Power Watch: Electricity Rates for Feb 2010

Nothing has changed much. The lowest rate is 10.7 cents per kWh by Brilliant Energy for 12 months down from 10.8 from last month. The highest rate is 14.6 by Liberty for 24 months up from 12.8 last month.

TXU  and Reliant continue to charge more than the smaller companies. TXU is at 13.5 for a 12 month contract and Reliant is at 12.4.

The lowest month to month plan is at 8.8 with Dynowatt and the highest is 14.2 by Texas Power.

The lowest 100% renewable energy is at 11.7 by YEP and the highest is 14.4 by TXU.

Palin's Hand Job to Teabaggers.

Just how stupid can this lady be?
Sarah Palin was back in 10th grade biology class yesterday -- using cheat notes on her hand during the Q&A following her speech at the Tea Party Convention in Tennessee.
Wow. And to think the teabaggers are saying "She is just like me!". Like DUH! Literally.

LaRouche Hitler Youth Group CD22 Candidate

We have 3 very strange candidates running in the Democratic primary to challenge Pete Olson in CD22. One is a Libertarian. One has absolutely no clue. The other is a member of the LaRouche Hitler Youth Group, a far out (not left or right, just out) candidate. She, Keisha Rogers, is not a Democrat but that doesn't stop her from running as one. Here is Congressman Barney Frank having his way with a LaRouchey.

CD22, the former district of Tom DeLay loves republicans. In 2008 they voted for Pete Olson who replaced a ranking Democrat, Nick Lampson, on the Science Committee in charge of NASA. Lampson would have been the chair of the Committee, instead voters replaced him with Olson, a space rookie. NASA's Constellation program has since been canceled in the 2011 budget, but at least CD22 has a republican Congressman.

Rogers ran for the Chair of the Texas Democratic Party in 2006. I think she got 20 or so votes from her Hitler Youth members. You might see the members standing in front of a post office handing out worthless LaRouche magazines complaining about something someone is doing and calling for interplanetary trade. (I am serious!) LaRouche people are good at complaining, but nothing else.

They tend to be young, but misguided. They would rather complain in front of a Post Office instead of walking door to door for a candidate. They also like to carry around pictures of Obama pictured as Hitler. Keisha is also calling for the impeachment of the President. Why? Who knows.

Regardless of who wins the primary, neither has a clue about running a campaign. There is a good reason why no good candidate wants to run in CD22. These candidates obviously do not know about this little secret.

Raising Campaign Cash from Bob Perry in 2009

It's not a record for Homebuilder, Bob Perry, but it is a very large chunk of money.

Perry donated $2,076,405 in 2009 including $205,000 to Democrats and $1,871,405 to Republicans and Republican causes. Attorney General Greg Abbott received $200,000, Lt Governor Dewhurst $100,000, $300,000 went to Governor Rick Perry, and $30,000 to new comer, Addie Wisemen. Addie is a former City Council Member of District E (Clear Lake and Kingwood) She is running for State Representative in the Kingwood area.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform received a lump sum of $250,000. TLR acts like Perry's personal front group working to keep Perry and the home building industry from being held responsible for their actions. The donations to Governor Perry and others couldn't stop the abolishment of Perry's Texas Residential Construction Commission. The spreadsheet can be downloaded here.

In 2008 Perry donated over $4Million:
Whether the tail is wagging the dog is for others to decide, but the facts concerning Perry's donations are clear. In 2008, Perry donated $4,238,250. $364,000 (8.5%) was donated to Democrats.

Teabaggers: Illiterate African Americans Elected Obama

One of the Teabagger Nation keynote speakers was former Republican Congressman and candidate for Klucker of the year, Tom Tancredo. Tancredo's hatred for immigrants have overflowed to African Americans in his speech to the Teabagger Convention.
In his speech Thursday to attendees, former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo invoked the loaded pre-civil rights era buzzword, saying that President Barack Obama was elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country."
Of course this type of speech fit well with the angry white republican crowd, all 600 of them, which for a national convention was a tad small, probably due to the $500/head price tag. Most of this will go to Sarah Palin who will follow the racist comments of Tancredo with her soothing high pitch squawking and also to.

Republican Teabaggers are the worst of the right. The party of Tancredo, Palin, and Nugent. The Ku. The Klux. The Klan.

How to Search the Texas Ethics Commission's Database

Over the last few years we have posted a series titled "Spending Campaign Cash" and a few "Raising Campaign Cash" highlighting what our elected officials in Austin are doing with their donors money. Many are following the laws of the Texas Ethics Commission while some have been spending their donors money on personal items such as custom made cowboy boots, condos, cars, and football tickets. Many of these violations have disappeared after a few citizens took action that the TEC should have done.

So, how do you search the TEC website to find out what your elected official is spending your donations on? Browse to http://www.ethics.state.tx.us/php/cesearch.html. It is not the easiest search tool. First put the last name of the individual into the search engine at the top of the page. Hit enter to the right of the name.

The next page will have a listing of those with the last name. Copy the Filer ID and return to the first page. Now scroll down to the Advanced Search area. If you want to get a report on all expenditures select "Expenditures" in the transaction type block. And select "All Years" in the "Year" block. Now scroll down a bit further and copy the Filer ID into the block labeled "Filer ID".

You will notice that there are alot of options available for you to use, but I found the results unreliable. Downloading the entire data into a spreadsheet is much easier to manipulate and use.

Now go to the bottom of the page and select the "Excel" button. This will give you an Excel spreadsheet with all the expenditures for the elected official with the corresponding Filer ID. When you open the spreadsheet you will have to convert the date and money columns to data/currency. Usually they are just in text format. I usually remove the first header line then make the conversions.

It is that simple. Now sort on the date, or any other column to find the data that you want.
